Solo biker in OK

I recently moved to eastern Oklahoma from Davis, California, a city awarded the Platinum Level by the Bicycle-Friendly Community program, where I was one of hundreds of people who commuted by bike. I ride my bike to and from work a few days a week. Nobody really rides bikes here and there aren't bike lanes, which I can deal with. However, I'm getting heckled a lot -- i.e., people in cars honking horns and teenagers yelling "WOO!" -- and I have a harder time dealing with that. Short of calling the police, what can I do? I'd appreciate tips, support, and stories from fellow bike commuters.

Forum: Introductions

Hi,

I am a student at Boston University. This semester I am developing a new type of bike lock. As part of my project I am trying to get feedback from people who bike in the city.

Here is the link to a completely confidential, anonymous survey: http://team4core.questionpro.com/

I would really appreciate it if you could take 5 minutes to give me some feedback.

Thank you!

Forum: Bike Commuting Gear and Accessories

Lighting

I frequently ride in the dark...so I wear a reflective vest, my bike has reflective tape all over it, wheel reflectors and the usual front and back reflectors. For lights I have two on my helmet, tiny strap on L.E.D. strobe lights, one red one white, a big red strobe on the back of the bike, a bright L.E.D. on the front. I can see well and more importantly I can be seen. I got all my lights etc...at Mountain Equipment Coop. I don't know if you all have that store in your area but they are really good for biking accessories.

Forum: Bicycle Lights

Fenders anyone?

I like fenders when its raining. I installed them on my bike and they are great during the crappy weather. But during nice weather I wish they were not on. They do tend to be a tad noisy. I took them off once this summer, but got pelted by the worse rain, thunder and hail storm on the way home. So now I leave the fenders on.

Forum: Bike Commuting in all types of weather

My commuter

I have used road bikes 30 years ago, still own one. But ever since the early 80's and I got my first mountain bike, I prefer commuting on a mountain bike. It is sturdy, safe, I can jump curbs with it and I find it more comfortable to ride for my 9 km commute. Actually I am selling the road bike because I just don't like the feel or ride it produces. I don't mind going slower and in more comfort.

Forum: Commuting Bikes

Hello from Calgary

Hi I am new here. From Calgary Alberta. I have been commuting by bike off and on (depending on distance from work) for many years Probably at least 10 now. I think bike commuting is the best way to keep fit at least three seasons per year. I sometimes ride in the winter too during mild weather. I hope to have some fun just discussing bicycle commuting here with like minded people.

Forum: Introductions

Most Enjoyable Bike Ride

Ok, this was not a commuting trip but today I enjoyed one of the best rides I've had in a long time. My 10 year old son and I rode to a local park to play football. After playing football for a while we got back on our bikes and proceeded to the exit to go back home. My son said "Dad, I just want to ride around". Well, we went on a 12 mile ride through neighborhoods we had never been through. Found parks we had never been to before and just had a great time.

Now that's my kind of bike ride

What has been your favorite bike ride?

Forum: The Daily Commute
